The signs and symbols that designate our beliefs and affiliations are slippery. While the Christian cross, the Islamic star and crescent, the Jewish Star of David, and their copyrighted, vigorously litigated corporate equivalents — swooshes, apples and targets — may prove resilient, a dizzying mix of familiar and newly minted graphic devices now compete for our dwindling attention. These days there is no movement without messaging. Even anarchy has a brand identity, its scratchy circled A logo has migrated from your corner lamppost to a pair of Converse Chuck Taylor Anarchy-edition All-Stars. From the pink hats of the Women’s March to the red hats of the Capitol raid, rainbows to thin blue lines, salute emojis to watermelon emojis, we are navigating a thicket of improvised graphic devices.

Asia-Pacific markets are set for a mixed open ahead of Japan's corporate inflation figures for February, as well as trade data from the Philippines. Japan's corporate inflation rate for January is expected to come in at 0.5%, according to a Reuters poll. Investors will also be keeping an eye on inflation figures out of India as well as the U.S. later Tuesday, which could give a clue as to when the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates.

CNN —Astronomers using the Hubble Space Telescope have detected water molecules in the atmosphere of a small, blazing-hot exoplanet 97 light-years from Earth. The planet, named GJ 9827d, is about twice Earth’s diameter, and it’s the smallest exoplanet found to have water vapor in its atmosphere, according to a new study. Starlight filtering through the planet’s atmosphere helped astronomers measure the signature of water molecules. It’s possible that the planet is a mini-Neptune with a hydrogen-rich atmosphere that contains water vapor. Or astronomers suspect that GJ 9827d could be a warmer version of Jupiter’s icy moon Europa, which contains an ocean beneath a thick, icy crust.

[1/9] People react after the release of Palestinian prisoners amid a hostages-prisoners swap deal between Hamas and Israel, in Ramallah in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, November 28, 2023. Those have been mostly Israeli women and children along with foreign citizens. Israel has said the truce could be prolonged further, provided Hamas continues to free at least 10 Israeli hostages per day. Separately, foreign ministers of the Group of Seven nations on Tuesday called in a joint statement for an extension of the ceasefire and more humanitarian aid. It had been due to expire overnight into Tuesday, but both sides agreed to extend the pause to allow for the release of more Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

She lived through nine months of Russian occupation in Kherson region; her house was searched twice and Russian soldiers roamed the streets rounding up men of fighting age. But the Russian assaults are now more punishing than ever, according to Oleksandr Tolokonnikov, a spokesman for the Kherson Region Military Administration. In mid-October, a Ukrainian cross-river raid managed to temporarily infiltrate occupied villages on the eastern — or left — bank of the river. “It seems that Russians on the left bank are very worried that our brave soldiers will soon cross the river to them and start liberating the left bank. The Hamas-run government said airstrikes killed and wounded many people, but the exact toll was not yet known. The toll from Tuesday's strikes was also unknown, though the director of a nearby hospital said hundreds were killed or wounded. Dozens of people could be seen entering the Rafah crossing — the only one currently operating — and ambulances carrying wounded Palestinians exited on the Egyptian side. Egypt had earlier said that more than 80 Palestinians — out of many thousands wounded in the war — would also be brought in for treatment. Over 1,400 people have died on the Israeli side, mainly civilians killed during Hamas’ initial attack, also an unprecedented figure.

The bankruptcy of prison health provider Corizon has faced pressure from senators and a federal regulator in recent weeks. Other troubling questions surrounding the bankruptcy involve payments to insiders, "dishonest" testimony, and a secret data breach. The other company, Tehum, was saddled with most of Corizon's liabilities and, in February, filed for bankruptcy. Experts say that this road feature reduces traffic and car crashes. I research transportation engineering, particularly traffic safety and traffic operations. The birth of the modern roundabout came with yield-at-entry regulations, adopted in some towns in Great Britain in the 1950s. The first modern roundabout in the U.S. was built in Summerlin, on the west side of Las Vegas, in 1990. Ever since, the construction of modern roundabouts in the U.S. has picked up steam.

But for older adults, our towns and cities are filled with obstacles — stairs, unsafe sidewalks and crossings, inadequate lighting — that grow increasingly difficult for them as they age. Alberto Lau, 78, San DiegoDr. Hong responds: Busy streets and intersections can be challenging for older adults to navigate. Additionally, installing more crosswalks and making them more visible can make it easier for older adults to cross the street safely. Yet more and more older adults need the kind of high-quality transportation that can reliably get them from one place to another. This can be especially important for older adults, who may have slower reaction times or difficulty seeing oncoming traffic.

The nurse practitioner on duty that day was employed by Corizon Health, Inc., one of the nation's largest private prison healthcare providers. Under federal law, a bankruptcy judge may respond to evidence of self-dealing or perjury by appointing a trustee to take control of the bankrupt company, bankruptcy experts told Insider. Just six months before the Garcia family was scheduled to have their day in court, Corizon filed for bankruptcy. "The Corizon bankruptcy is presently in a court ordered mediation, and we are seeking a global resolution for all the parties involved." The humanitarian disaster of the burst dam may only amount to a setback for Ukraine's military. Even before the dam break, the Dnipro River was a formidable obstacle for Ukrainian forces. Ukraine might have chosen to avoid a risky river crossing anyway for their counter-offensive. Ukraine accused Russian forces last October of mining the Russian-controlled dam. Instead of crossing the Dnipro, another option for Ukraine is to attack east of the river entirely.

Ukraine aide proposes post-war demilitarised zone in Russia
  + stars: | 2023-05-29 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
KYIV, May 29 (Reuters) - A Ukrainian presidential aide said on Monday a demilitarised zone of 100-120 km (62-75 miles) should be established inside Russia along the border with Ukraine as part of a post-war settlement. The zone would be necessary to protect Ukrainian regions from Russian attacks, presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak wrote on Twitter. Moscow says Ukraine has stepped up drone and sabotage attacks against targets inside Russia as it prepares for the offensive. Kyiv has denied firing at targets inside Russia, saying it is fighting a defensive war on its own territory. The reference to the Russian regions as republics appeared to be a nod towards Moscow backing separatist entities calling themselves "people's republics" in Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk regions which border Russia.
Earth-sized alien planet gripped by widespread volcanism

In our solar system, Earth and Venus are volcanically active, as are some of Jupiter's moons. Planets beyond our solar system are called exoplanets. Here, water from the nightside glacier can melt and possibly form liquid surface water. In addition, there is likely volcanism all around the planet, even under the ice on the nightside and possibly under the water near the terminator," Benneke said. The planet is located in the Milky Way about 86 light-years away from our solar system in the direction of the constellation Crater.
Earth-size exoplanet may be covered in volcanoes
  + stars: | 2023-05-17 | by ( Ashley Strickland | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Instead, the exoplanet, called LP 791-18 d, is likely covered in volcanoes and may experience eruptions with the same frequency as Jupiter’s moon Io, the most volcanically active place in our solar system, according to researchers. LP 791-18 d is located about 90 light-years from Earth in the Crater constellation, where it orbits a small red dwarf star. And astronomers believe the massive planet LP 971-18 c might be contributing to the newly detected exoplanet’s possible volcanism. As the two objects orbit their star, LP 971-18 c and the newfound exoplanet LP 791-18 d closely pass each other, allowing the gravitational pull of the larger planet LP 971-18 c to tug on planet d and reshape its orbit. The discovery of LP 971-18 d points to the importance of data collected by space telescopes.

HOUSTON, March 29 (Reuters) - U.S. private forecaster AccuWeather expects a near-average to below-average 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, which begins June 1, according to a forecast issued on Wednesday. AccuWeather said it expects between 11-15 named tropical storms, 4-8 hurricanes and between one and three major hurricanes to form in the Atlantic Ocean before the season ends on Nov. 30. "We think El Nino will drive this season," said Dan Kottlowski, lead hurricane forecaster for AccuWeather. Kottlowski noted that even in a year when fewer storms are expected, people as far as 100 miles (160 km) inland have to prepare for tropical storms. Between 1990 and 2020, the average season has seen 14 named tropical storms, seven hurricanes with three of those considered to be major.
Shunned by the West, Assad has been basking in an outpouring of support from Arab states that have normalised ties with him in recent years, notably the United Arab Emirates (UAE). On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia sent its first reported plane of aid to Assad-controlled Aleppo, a notable gesture from a Gulf state still at odds with Syria's president. 'BREAK THE SIEGE'The UAE has pledged $50 million in aid to Syria, without saying in which part of Syria it will be spent. Once a backer of Assad's foes, the UAE has been pressing other Arab states to re-engage with Damascus, according to two Gulf sources, despite opposition from its strategic ally the United States. Tunisia, which cut off ties with Syria a decade ago, has said it will strengthen relations with Damascus since the quake.

[1/2] Cars are parked in front of Russia's Central Bank headquarters in Moscow, Russia March 29, 2021. Russia is seeking to reduce transactions with what it terms "toxic" currencies - those of countries that have imposed sanctions on Russia, in particular the dollar and euro. Use of China's yuan by Russian companies increased dramatically since Feb. 24, when Russia sent thousands of troops into Ukraine. Russians have bought 139.6 billion roubles ($2.28 billion)worth of Chinese yuan so far this year, the central bank estimated. "The challenge for Russian banks is the limited scope of opportunities in interest-bearing yuan investments," it said.

As Iran struggles to quell a wave of street protests at home, the regime launched a drone and missile attack on an Iranian-Kurdish opposition group in neighboring Iraq on Wednesday, Kurdish and U.S. officials said. The Iranian attack left at least nine people dead and 32 wounded, Kurdish authorities in the area said. Smoke billows following an Iranian cross-border attack in the area of Zargwez, about 9 miles from Sulaimaniyah, Iraq, on Sept. 28, 2022. The U.S. condemned the Iranian attack as an assault on Iraq’s sovereignty and accused the regime of trying to divert attention from domestic turmoil. No U.S. troops were wounded or killed in the Iranian attack.
